Cherry Orchard

Author:

Janet Mullarney

Description:

Janet Mullarney's artistic intervention into Cherry Orchard NS, Dublin consists of a series of small-scale sculptures sited throughout a new school building in Cherry Orchard. Made out of a range of materials - bronze, fabric, foam, wood - Mullarney's sculptures include, boats, creatures, acrobats, clouds, animals, saints, each taking their place - prime and marginal - in architectures ordering of space.  O'Donnell and Tuomey's new building with its Romanesque feel, and allegiance to traditional (craft) materials - concrete, brick and wood - creates a restrained architecture reminiscent of the Bauhaus.  Mullarney's intervention readily connecting to this architecture and yet imparting a different text, a touch of magic fantasy, bold colour, distraction is documented in an artists book.

The book includes, images of the artworks within their architectural setting a series of texts including a forward by project commissioner and curator Ruairí Ó Cuív.
