A sculptural light installation in blue and green LED lights, in the Civic Centre Ballymun, creating the illusion of bringing two corners of the atrium together.

Commissioned by Breaking Ground, the Ballymun Regeneration Per Cent for Art programme, Corban Walker was asked to address the vast interior atrium of the Civic Centre in Ballymun. Struck by the enormous scale of this space, he made a work in dazzling blue and green LED lights, which ‘stitches’ two walls together; creating the illusion of bringing two corners of the atrium nearer to each other. Zip's, playful op-art qualities, which reference Brigid Reilly and Dan Flavin, wittily animate and illuminate the vast atrium space of the busy Civic Centre in Ballymun.

Corban Walker (b. 1967, Dublin, Ireland) is known for his installations, sculptures, and drawings that relate to perceptions of scale and architectural constructs. His local, cultural, and specific philosophies of scale are fundamental to how he defines and develops his work, creating new means for viewers to interact and navigate their surroundings.

Since graduating with honors from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, with a degree in Fine Art Sculpture in 1992, Walker has employed various mediums, at times painting and drawing, creating site-specific installations and using photography or digital art, to convey his ideas. Walker’s first solo show was held at the City Arts Centre in Dublin, Ireland in 1994. Since then, he has mounted solo exhibitions in England, France, Chicago and New York and has realized eight public commissions for important institutions such as the Bank of Scotland Headquarters, Dublin and Mitsubishi Estate Co. Ltd, Tokyo. In 1996, the artist represented Ireland in L’Imaginaire Irlandais Festival, in Poitiers, France.  His work is part of numerous public and private collections around the world, including the Irish Museum of Art, Dublin. Walker first exhibited with PaceWildenstein gallery in New York in the autumn of 2000 and his work was included in the gallery’s Logical Conclusions exhibition (2004) alongside works by key artists such as Sol LeWitt, Chuck Close and Andrea Zittel. 

Corban Walker has lived and worked in New York since 2004.
