Public Art Commissioning and Local Authorities
Local Authorities have a significant role to play in commissioning contemporary art through the per cent for art scheme. Below are some examples of the wide variety of different types of art projects and artforms which have been commissioned by Local Authorities for their constituencies and for the wider public in the recent past.
Perpetual Motion - Remco de Fouw & Rachel Joynt
Sending Letters to the Sea - Mark Garry
Lucan Portrait - Katharine Lamb
Windowwall - Caroline McCarthy
Travelogue - Theresa Nanigian
Hotel Ballymun - Seamus Nolan
50 Ways to Leave Dún Laoghaire - Ciarán Taylor & Carpet Theatre
Greystones Educate Together National School appointed a voluntary committee with relevant expertise to oversee the per cent for art commissioning process. An external curator, Máire Davey, was appointed specifically for her expertise in working in a highly collaborative way as meaningful involvement from the students and school was viewed as central to the process. The procurement route chosen was limited invited competition.
