Just in! Temporary, site-specific art installation sought for Cork City Centre. Budget €10,000. DEADLINE EXTENDED to 31/07/14

URGENT

Cork City Council is seeking proposals for a temporary artwork to be installed in vacant spaces in its historic centre.

This exciting public art commission is a small-scale Pilot Project to be installed across 1 or 2 elevations/buildings with vacant upper floors in a prominent location in the Historic Spine area and provide a temporary installation that highlights and animates the building with colour, light and movement.

There is an artist's budget of €10,000 available.

The DEADLINE for submissions has been extended to 31st July 2014.

CONTEXT

The 'Cork City Centre Strategy' proposes the creation of a new catalyst project along the historic spine of Barrack Street, North and South Main Street and Shandon Street. The initial proposal from the strategy states that: “The main feature that would make the corridor a destination is the colourful decoration of buildings and the inclusion of high quality street art”.

Cork City Council has secured funding to run a pilot project for commissioning temporary public art along this urban corridor under the Department of Environment, Community, and Local Government’s Public Area Enhancement Scheme fund.

This once-off fund is being provided to support local authorities’ efforts to prepare and maintain their public areas in an effort to maximise the economic benefits that can flow from increased visitors. The aim is to undertake inexpensive projects that have the potential to have an impact beyond 2014, to change people’s perceptions of shared spaces, encourage wider debate and collaborative working.

The art project must highlight a specific building / building group in a prominent location on the corridor by day and night. It must provoke a debate about upper floor vacancy and the condition of buildings in Cork City Centre on the Historic Spine and provide an opportunity for the City Council and the artist to engage with stakeholder forums about building use and building custodianship issues in the area.

Budget:            €10,000

Target:            1 or 2 buildings (one or more elevations)

The budget will include: building owner engagement, artist’s fees, production, installation, lighting and electricity

The work is intended to be a temporary work. The exact duration of the installation is to be agreed with the building owner. The minimum period that the work will remain is envisaged to be to the end January 2015 but this is subject to change.
