Call for artists/craftspeople to work with Coolmine Therapeutic Centre. Budget €6,000. Deadline;19/5/14

Create, in partnership with the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCoI) and Coolmine Therapeutic Community is seeking expressions of interest from artists and craftspeople with experience of working within the context of substance misuse and recovery, to create a new contemporary collaborative artwork utilising clay as a key material.

This commission invites proposals from artists, makers, ceramic artists and artist partnerships. For the duration of this briefing document the individual applying will be referred to as the artist.

The commission is funded by Léargas through the Grundtvig Programme, which is part of the European Commission’s Lifelong Learning Programme, focusing on education for adults, through formal, non-formal or in informal methods. The Typecast Project was instigated by Portraits of Recovery in partnership with the British Ceramic Biennial as a pilot in 2012. This iteration of the project, Typecast 2014, involves an EU learning collaboration across six countries in order to develop and share methodologies, which support artists working with people in recovery from substance misuse.

'Typecast' centres on the use of clay as a medium, material and process, offering an opportunity to artists to work collaboratively with a community in recovery to explore ideas that may stem from the groups’ experience.

Context

Coolmine Therapeutic Community provides a rehabilitation service for clients in recovery from alcohol and drugs use. Initially opened in 1973 in response to the proliferation of drug use and associated problems in Dublin in the early 1970’s, unfortunately this problem has grown and services are needed now more than ever.

Coolmine TC, as with other TCs, has changed and modified its treatment programmes to include a client-centred approach where individuality, causal, social and structural factors inform the individual treatment plan for the client. Coolmine Therapeutic Community no longer regards itself as self-contained as it works in partnership with other statutory and voluntary agencies as well as its local community.

Coolmine Therapeutic Community was awarded the Royal College of Psychiatrist’s ‘Community of Communities’ accreditation in January of 2012. This is a quality improvement and accreditation programme for Therapeutic Communities in the UK and oversees to help meet the highest standards of therapeutic community practice through a process of self-and peer-review.

Coolmine TC have developed an approach to addiction over the years, working together as a community and giving clients increasing responsibility that makes a huge difference to their lives and to the lives of their families too.

Vision: Coolmine Therapeutic Community believes that everyone should have the opportunity to overcome addiction and lead a fulfilled and productive life.

Mission Statement: Coolmine Therapeutic Community provides a range of quality community and residential services to empower people to end their dependence on drugs and alcohol.

Coolmine TC Values;

Dignity & Respect: We ensure the dignity and respect of individuals by actively listening and holding a non-judgmental attitude which is supported by our service standards.

Compassion: We believe that compassion is demonstrated through responsible love, concern and understanding for each other.

Honesty, Consistency and Responsibility: This value lies at the core of what we believe and is demonstrated by accountability and transparency in all areas of our organisation.

Safety & Security: We believe in the physical and psychological safety and security for all through the implementation of sound policy and procedure.

Commitment to Quality: We are committed to quality through evidence-based practice, research and continuous improvement of our standards and resources.
