The New Sound operate as sound mirrors reflecting sound within a close radius of the centre of the white circles. This work was inspired by Marconi's experiments in early transatlantic communication much of which were carried out on the coasts of North Donegal. The form of the work refers to the concrete early warning devices that were used in the build up to WWll to detect the sound of incoming fighter jets prior to the invention of radar and that still stand defiantly along the east coast of England as monuments to an obsolete technology. The New Sound is concerned with the echo of this concave form in the contemporary communication devices that are abundant on our landscape. Within this work is a concern for a contemporary monumentality and a reflection on how we as a society represent ourselves through lasting material constructions.

Ruth E Lyons graduated with a BA Hons in Fine Art Sculpture from NCAD in 2007. In her personal practice she works primarily in sculpture and large scale installation, creating works that respond to utilitarian structures in our landscape. Ruth is co-founded and director of the Good Hatchery studios in Co. Offaly from where she conducts a curatorial practice and a collaboration with Carl Giffney under the same name.

Ruth is currently on residency in the Fire Station studios in Dublin. Upcoming shows in 2011 include group shows at SOMA in Waterford, Monster Truck Temple Bar, the Kerlin Gallery, a Good Hatchery show at Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray and a solo show in the Lab.
