Sean Lynch presents excerpts from Yesterday's Papers
Sean Lynch, invited by Publicart.ie, presents excerpts from his book Yesterday's Papers - offering an overview of newspaper coverage of art and artists in Ireland in the last fifty years. The three excerpts, presented here over the coming three weeks, deal with the history of ROSC, a series of exhibitions between 1967 and 1988 that are considered the most comprehensive presentations of modern art in Ireland during that time.
Yesterday's Papers includes photographs and articles drawn from national dailies and a selection of regional titles along with a series of contextual notes. With an emphasis on the social realities that cultural production has encountered in Ireland, several topics repeatedly arise in its pages: conservative reactions to the introduction of modern art into the country, vandalism of artworks, and the newsworthy character of artists with their many inventive ideas and schemes are all prominent.
